What Happens In Foundations At Maverick?
Starting CrossFit can feel intimidating.
A lot of people are not scared of working out. They are scared of not knowing what to expect.
They wonder if they are going to be the most out of shape person in the room. They wonder if everyone else will know what they are doing. They wonder if they need to already understand the movements, the workouts, the equipment, or all the CrossFit terms before they start.
That is exactly why Foundations exists.
Foundations is not a test.
It is not a workout where we try to see if you are “ready” for CrossFit.
It is where we slow things down, teach the basics, answer questions, and help you feel more comfortable before jumping into regular classes.
Foundations Is Not About Proving Yourself
You do not need to prove anything in Foundations.
You do not need to show us how strong you are. You do not need to crush a workout. You do not need to know what every movement is called.
The goal is simple.
We want to get to know you, teach you how classes work, and help you understand how to start in a way that makes sense for your current fitness level.
That looks different for everyone.
Some people come in after years of training. Some people are brand new. Some people have old injuries. Some are nervous. Some are excited. Most are a little bit of both.
That is normal.
We Teach The Basics
Foundations gives us time to go over the movements you will see in class.
That does not mean you need to master everything before you start.
Nobody does.
But it helps to understand the basics. How to squat. How to hinge. How to press. How to use certain equipment. How to move with control. How to listen to coaching cues and make small adjustments.
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is to build enough understanding that your first classes feel less overwhelming.
You will still learn as you go. That is part of the process. Foundations just gives you a better starting point.
We Explain How Class Works
A regular CrossFit class has a flow.
There is usually a brief, a warm-up, movement review, strength or skill work, the workout, and some kind of cool down or wrap-up.
If you have never done it before, that can feel like a lot.
Foundations helps you understand what is happening and why.
We talk through how workouts are written, what the coach is looking for, how to choose weights, how to ask questions, and how to know what version of the workout is right for you.
That way, when you walk into class, you are not just standing there trying to figure everything out on the fly.
We Talk About Scaling
This is one of the most important parts.
CrossFit was meant to be scaled.
That means the workout can be adjusted to fit the person doing it.
The weight can change. The movement can change. The reps can change. The range of motion can change. The pace can change.
That does not mean you are doing the fake version.
It means you are doing the right version.
At Maverick, we care about the goal of the workout. We want you to get the right stimulus for the day, not just copy what someone else is doing.
Scaling is how you train hard, move well, stay safer, and keep progressing long term.
We Learn About You
Foundations is also a chance for us to learn about you.
Your training history matters.
Your goals matter.
Your injuries, limitations, schedule, confidence level, and past gym experiences all matter.
If you have not trained in years, we need to know that. If your shoulder bothers you overhead, we need to know that. If you are nervous about certain movements, we need to know that too.
The more we understand where you are starting, the better we can coach you.
This is not about putting everyone into the same box.
It is about helping each person start in the right place.
You Get A Better First Experience
Could someone jump straight into class without Foundations?
Maybe.
But for a lot of people, Foundations makes the whole experience better.
You walk in with a little more confidence. You understand the class flow. You know some of the movements. You know that workouts can be adjusted. You have already talked with a coach. You have already asked some questions.
That matters.
The hardest part for most people is walking through the door the first time.
Foundations makes that step feel a little less intimidating.
The Goal Is Confidence, Not Perfection
You will not leave Foundations knowing everything.
That is not the goal.
The goal is to leave with enough confidence to start.
You will keep learning in class. You will keep getting coached. You will keep improving. That is how this works.
Nobody starts with everything figured out.
You start where you are, learn the basics, show up consistently, and build from there.
