What Does a Coach Actually Do During a CrossFit Class?

You can find a workout online pretty easily. Knowing where to start, which weight to use, and what to do when a movement feels awkward can take a little more help.

That’s a big part of what our coaches do at Maverick CrossFit in Melbourne, FL.

Before the workout

We explain what you’re doing and what we’re trying to get out of it. Some days call for heavier lifting with rest between sets. Other days, we want you using a weight you can keep moving with.

Then we practice. You get a chance to try the movements, ask questions, and work with your coach on the right version for you.

You aren’t expected to walk in knowing how to do everything.

Once the clock starts

The coaching keeps going.

We’re watching how you move, how the weight looks, and how you’re handling the workout. You might need a reminder about your setup, a different pace, or an adjustment to the movement.

Sometimes one small change makes a big difference. Sometimes we need to explain something another way.

You should have someone helping you figure it out.

When you’ve been training for years

You still need coaching. The things you’re working on might just look different.

Maybe you’re ready for more weight. Maybe you’re learning a harder skill. Maybe you can do the movement well on its own, but it gets messy halfway through a workout.

We want to help with that, too. Experience doesn’t mean you’ve run out of things to learn.

Different people, one class

You’ll see people using different weights and doing different versions of a movement at MAV. They can train alongside each other and each have something worthwhile to work on.

A new athlete deserves attention. So does someone preparing for a competition. Good coaching helps both get what they need from the hour.

If you’re looking for a gym and wondering where you’d fit, come talk with us. We’ll ask about your experience and goals, answer your questions, and help you find a starting point.
